Air changes per hour (ACH) is the airflow rate divided by a room's volume, expressed as the number of room-volumes of air passing through the space in one hour. In a compact home, ACH helps relate a ventilation system or air cleaner to the actual volume it serves. It is not automatically a measure of outdoor air, filtration, or fresh-air quality. State whether the figure describes outdoor-air ventilation, mechanical supply or exhaust, infiltration, total recirculated airflow, or equivalent clean-air delivery.

Calculate ACH from room volume

Use room volume, not floor area alone. Measure the room's length, width, and ceiling height, then multiply those dimensions to get cubic feet. The basic formula is ACH = airflow in cubic feet per minute multiplied by 60, divided by room volume in cubic feet. For example, 100 cubic feet per minute in a 1,000-cubic-foot room equals 6 ACH. The result is a rate per hour, not a claim that a fixed percentage of air has been replaced with pristine air.

In a small room, less airflow is needed to reach the same ACH than in a large room because the volume is smaller. That does not mean a compact room always has a higher ACH. Actual ACH depends on both the airflow and the volume. A bedroom with a high ceiling can contain more air than its floor area suggests, while an open-plan home may have a served volume that is larger than one visually defined zone. Decide which volume the equipment or ventilation path actually serves before using the number.

Identify the status of the airflow figure as well. It may be measured, estimated, rated, or tested under a particular operating condition. A manufacturer's maximum fan setting is not automatically the home's achieved ACH. Record the operating setting, the airflow basis, and the room volume used. If doors connect the space to a larger area, decide whether those connected spaces belong in the calculation rather than treating a closed-room estimate as exact.

ACH in ventilation and air cleaning

ACH can describe outdoor-air ventilation delivered by a mechanical supply or exhaust system, or air entering through infiltration. Those mechanisms affect what the rate means. More outdoor-air exchange can dilute indoor pollutants, but it can also increase heating or cooling load. Sealing a small home without intentional ventilation can reduce uncontrolled leakage while leaving moisture and pollutants less able to escape. ACH by itself does not decide whether a home has adequate indoor air quality or establish one universal target. Occupancy, pollutant sources, climate, equipment, and applicable requirements matter.

An air cleaner creates a different comparison. A portable cleaner's clean-air delivery rate, or CADR, can be converted to an equivalent clean-air change rate by relating the CADR to room volume. That can help compare particle-cleaning capacity with room size, but it is not the same as outdoor-air ACH. EPA's room-sizing guidance treats CADR as a particle-cleaning measure. Do not label recirculated, filtered air as outdoor-air changes, and do not assume that a claimed purifier ACH is comparable unless the test room, CADR, ceiling height, and operating condition are known. An air purifier is therefore a related tool, not a substitute definition for ACH.

Compare ACH with nearby terms

ACH and ventilation overlap, but they are not interchangeable labels. ACH is a normalized rate that relates airflow to volume. Ventilation is the broader process or system that supplies outdoor air or removes indoor air. A ventilation description should identify the airflow path and purpose. A bare ACH number leaves those details unresolved.

ACH also differs from air sealing. Air sealing reduces unintended leakage through cracks and gaps. It does not by itself specify how much air is exchanged afterward. A sealed compact home may need a deliberate ventilation strategy, but the appropriate design depends on the building, occupants, climate, and applicable requirements. Do not turn an ACH calculation into a universal prescription.

Avoid misleading ACH comparisons

The most common calculation error is using square footage alone. A 200-square-foot room with a 10-foot ceiling has a different volume from a 200-square-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling, so the same airflow produces different ACH values. Measure the actual ceiling height and include the space the airflow is intended to serve.

Another error is comparing unlike airflow types. Put outdoor-air ACH, total recirculated airflow, infiltration estimates, and equivalent clean-air delivery in separate labeled columns or sentences. State whether the figure is measured or rated and under what operating condition. If the number comes from a product's room-size claim, find the underlying airflow or CADR and compare it with the home's measured volume.

Use ACH as a calculation and comparison language, not as a shortcut for health, comfort, or compliance. A clear statement names the airflow mechanism, the room volume, the operating condition, and the limits of the evidence. That precision is especially useful in a small home, where cooking, moisture, occupants, and door opening can change conditions quickly.
