Ambient lighting is general illumination throughout an area. In a compact home, it provides the baseline visibility for circulation and everyday use without requiring several floor or table fixtures that consume scarce floor area, surfaces, and outlets. The term describes the job the light performs, not one fixture type. A ceiling fixture, diffuse pendant, wall wash, reflected light, or daylight can provide ambient lighting. A single reading lamp is not ambient lighting unless it supplies the room's general illumination.

What ambient lighting does in a small room

Treat ambient lighting as the room's background layer. It should make the overall area usable while leaving more specific activities to task lighting and visual emphasis to accent lighting. Daylight changes with time, weather, and shading, so retain controllable electric light where the room must remain usable. Keep the electric ambient layer controllable so the room can stay usable after daylight changes without keeping every task and accent source on.
