Candlepower is the older or common term for luminous intensity, the concentration of light from a source in a particular direction. In a compact home, it helps explain why a spotlight can feel harsh on a glossy wall or in your eye line even when its total light output is modest. Candlepower is not the same as lumens, which describe total luminous flux, or illuminance, which describes light arriving at a surface. What candlepower measures
Candlepower describes direction. Optics can concentrate a fixture's light into a narrow beam, producing high intensity along that beam and much less light at neighboring angles.
