In a compact home, containers make growing possible where there is no suitable soil and can be moved when light or weather changes. Choose the container and medium

Water thoroughly until it exits the holes, and empty a saucer that stays full so roots do not remain waterlogged.

Containers trade ground area for management. Their limited root volume and exposed sides can make them dry faster than plants in the ground. Check moisture often, especially after hot or windy weather, and water according to the plant and medium rather than copying an in-ground schedule. Heat, wind, container material, plant size, and growth stage all affect dry-down. Limited soil volume can also lose nutrients faster, so follow the selected fertilizer's label and the crop's guidance.

Start with the available light, then choose crops and containers that fit it. Group plants only when their light and moisture needs are compatible. Leave enough room to inspect, water, harvest, and move each container without blocking a narrow route. A dolly can help with a heavy pot only when the base remains stable and the route is safe. Portability does not make a full container lightweight.

A balcony can host a container garden, but placement requires more than checking whether a pot fits. Include the container, plant, growing medium, and water when considering wet weight. Plan a drainage path that will not send runoff to a neighbor, stain a wall, or create a slippery surface. Building type, jurisdiction, adopted edition, and the actual structure matter.
