Folding Patio Chair

A folding patio chair is an outdoor-use chair with a hinged or articulated frame that collapses for storage or carrying. Steel, aluminum, and wood frames may use plastic, sling, mesh, or textile seats. In a small home, folding can let one balcony or patio serve dining, gardening, and open-floor functions at different times. The chair still needs a stable open footprint, room to unfold, and a safe place to lean or store it. Folding does not guarantee stackability, reclining, portability, or a commercial-event rating. A stackable patio chair stays rigid and nests vertically with matching chairs, so the storage mechanism is different.

Measure both positions

Record the chair's open width, depth, and height before choosing a storage location. Then record its folded width, depth, and height, including arms or frame parts that project beyond the seat. Measure the route to the storage spot as well. A folded chair may be shallower than an open chair but still too tall or wide for a closet, under-bed space, wall hook, or balcony corner. Include door swing and the space needed to stand the chair safely without blocking the only route or an egress path.

Two IKEA examples show why one category-wide size would mislead. IKEA lists the FEJAN outdoor foldable chair at 17 3/8 inches wide, 16 1/2 inches deep, and 35 inches high, with a tested load of 220 lb. Its powder-coated steel frame and plastic seat are model-specific specifications. IKEA lists the ASKHOLMEN at 14 1/8 inches wide, 19 1/4 inches deep, and 34 1/4 inches high, with a tested load of 243 lb. Those figures are comparison points, not universal dimensions or capacity. Check the exact product page and manual for the chair you plan to use.

Check the mechanism before sitting

Open the chair fully on a stable surface. Confirm that the hinges, stops, or locking features have reached their intended position, and check the feet, fasteners, seat, and back for visible damage. Keep fingers clear of pinch points while folding. Do not infer a safe load from a thick tube, a heavy appearance, or a product photograph. Use the exact tested load supplied for that model, and stop using the chair if a hinge is loose, a frame is bent, or the seat material is damaged.

The folding frame creates a comfort and durability tradeoff. A chair that stores compactly may have less cushioning or lateral stiffness than a fixed chair, and repeated hinge movement adds parts that need inspection. Compare the seat width, seat depth, seat height, frame construction, and folded package with how long people will sit and where the chair will live between uses.

Folding versus stacking

A folding chair collapses into a smaller package, while a stackable chair stays rigid and nests with matching chairs. One or two folding chairs can make sense when they must disappear between uses. Several identical chairs may be faster to store as a stack if there is enough vertical clearance. Do not assume a folding chair will stack, or that a stackable chair will fit a narrow storage route. Measure the actual handling and storage space for the number of chairs you own.

Outdoor care and balcony placement

Material changes the care routine. IKEA's ASKHOLMEN uses acacia wood and calls for drying, covering, and periodic care when the chair is stored outside. Do not treat an outdoor wood chair as maintenance-free. Follow the maker's instructions for drying, covering, cleaning, and any re-staining or protective treatment. A metal or plastic chair has a different care schedule, so use its own manual rather than borrowing the wood-care instructions.

On a balcony, keep the chair away from a guard edge where it could become a step or be blown into a hazard. Furniture placement can also be limited by building, property, or local rules. The cited 2024 International Building Code provision addresses uniform loads on guards and handrails in specified jurisdictions and occupancies. It does not approve a particular chair, balcony arrangement, or storage method. Check the rules that apply to the actual building and location.
