A smart thermostat is a connected thermostat that controls a home's heating and cooling settings and can usually be adjusted through an app or web service. In a studio or one-bedroom, one wall control can automate comfort without a separate timer or bulky portable heater. A smart thermostat is not simply any thermostat with a digital display, and it is not the same as a temperature sensor: the thermostat controls the HVAC system, while a sensor mainly measures temperature at another point.

What makes a thermostat smart

The connected layer can add schedules, remote control, geofencing, usage feedback, and software updates. Features vary by model, and the certified product can include both the in-home device and its supporting connected service. That distinction matters in a small home because the wall unit may be compact while the experience also depends on an account, network, app, and vendor service.

A smart thermostat can be useful when a small home is empty for part of the day. A schedule or geofence can reduce heating or cooling while nobody is there, then restore a target setting before arrival. Automation does not fix an incorrectly sized or poorly balanced HVAC system, however. If one thermostat serves the whole dwelling, its reading can affect comfort everywhere. Avoid direct sun, a supply register, furniture that blocks airflow, and a drafty door. Those locations can make the thermostat read a misleading temperature and cause whole-home comfort drift.

Certified models have an important fallback. ENERGY STAR's current U.S. criteria require basic thermostat operation without connectivity, so loss of internet access does not have to remove local temperature control. Confirm the individual product manual before relying on any particular app, remote feature, or cloud-dependent function. The tradeoff for convenience is compatibility checking, account privacy, network dependence, and possible utility-program conditions.

Check the HVAC system before buying

Do not choose by screen style alone. Check the exact HVAC equipment, number of heating and cooling stages, heat-pump auxiliary heat, common-wire or other power requirements, and whether the manufacturer includes an adapter. Conventional forced-air, heat-pump, electric-resistance, boiler, multi-stage, and line-voltage systems can require different controls, wiring, or adapters. ENERGY STAR also notes that high-efficiency equipment may work best with a controller from the same manufacturer. A thermostat that fits the wall opening can still be electrically or functionally incompatible.

For a compact installation, measure the thermostat location and keep the screen reachable without placing furniture in the way. Confirm Wi-Fi coverage at the wall, plan how you will operate the system if the service is unavailable, and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. If you rent, check permission and any requirement to restore the original control before changing wiring.

ENERGY STAR's current criteria include static temperature accuracy of no more than plus or minus 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit, average network standby power of no more than 3.0 watts, and entry into network standby within 5 minutes after interaction. These are certification thresholds, not universal performance claims for every smart thermostat. Treat them as a way to understand a current U.S. certification, not as a promise that every connected model meets them.

Smart thermostat versus programmable thermostat

Both devices can follow a schedule. A programmable thermostat generally provides local schedule control, while a smart thermostat adds network-connected remote access, app or service features, and often occupancy or geofencing logic. Choose a programmable model when you only need a local repeating schedule and want to avoid the connected layer. Choose a smart model when remote adjustment or connected feedback is useful, but verify wiring and HVAC compatibility first.

A temperature sensor is a different component. It measures conditions at a location and may feed a compatible thermostat, but it is not automatically the device that switches heating or cooling. A smart thermostat can use sensors or occupancy inputs, yet the control function remains the key boundary.

Interpret energy claims carefully

ENERGY STAR evaluates connected thermostats with field data aggregated across homes. Its current criteria describe a lower-95-percent-confidence-limit target of at least 8 percent heating runtime reduction and 10 percent cooling runtime reduction for certified connected thermostats, using at least a year of customer data. Those figures are certification-method thresholds, not a guaranteed reduction in your utility bill. Fuel type, climate, equipment, occupancy, settings, and the condition of the home all affect results.

The older ENERGY STAR programmable-thermostat specification was suspended on December 31, 2009. Therefore, do not read a current ENERGY STAR connected-thermostat label as proof that an ordinary programmable thermostat has the same certification. As of September 8, 2026, use the current criteria and the exact model's documentation when comparing products.
