Throw Blanket Storage

Throw blanket storage is the container, furniture compartment, or other designated space where small blankets stay accessible but contained between uses. In a compact home, it keeps throws off seating and walking surfaces without requiring a large blanket chest. It is different from vacuum compression, which changes a blanket's volume and may have textile-care limitations.

Choose storage by access and protection

Start with how often you reach for the blankets. An open basket beside a sofa gives the quickest access and makes one everyday throw easy to return. A storage bag, lidded bin, cabinet, or under-bed case offers more dust protection, but adds a lid, zipper, door, or retrieval step. Soft-sided options can be easier to move or collapse when empty, while a rigid chest or cabinet may hold its shape and serve another furniture role.

The useful footprint is larger than the box or basket alone. Account for the outside dimensions, handles, lid or door swing, and the space needed to pull a blanket out. A tall, narrow basket can still block a door, vent, or walking line. Before buying, tape the full footprint and opening or retrieval zone on the floor. In a studio, a single everyday throw in the living area and sealed seasonal blankets elsewhere often uses less space than one oversized basket that becomes a mixed pile.

Measure the blanket and the destination

Fold each blanket in the way you expect to store it, then measure the folded length, width, and height. Compare those measurements with usable interior dimensions, not the pictured pile. Check the opening diameter or door clearance when a folded blanket must be lifted out. If the storage will sit on a shelf or under a bed, measure the clear height and depth, including any frame, trim, or nearby obstruction.

Product dimensions need careful reading. IKEA markets the STRANDSKATA storage bag for throws, and describes it as 100% cotton, handled, freestanding, and foldable when empty. Its page lists a 7 3/4-inch height variant and an 11 3/4-inch length, so confirm the selected variant rather than treating those figures as universal. IKEA's PÄRKLA product name lists a 21 3/4 by 19 1/4 by 11 3/4-inch storage-case size. The page also displays package dimensions, which are not the same as the container's usable space.

Do not use a blanket count as a planning measurement. Capacity changes with the blanket's dimensions, fiber, loft, and folding method. A case that fits one thin cotton throw may not fit the same number of thick fleece or wool blankets. Leave enough room to retrieve the item without compressing the rest into an unmanageable pile.

Keep stored textiles dry

Store blankets clean and fully dry. A closed bin or zipped bag can be suitable when moisture is not being sealed in, but no basket material, lid, or breathable label should be treated as a universal mold-prevention guarantee. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends controlling moisture, keeping indoor relative humidity below 60% and ideally between 30% and 50%, and drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours. If a blanket is damp from washing, weather, or use, dry it completely before folding it into closed storage. Follow the blanket's fiber and laundering instructions.

Basket or blanket chest?

A blanket chest is rigid furniture with a lid and may double as seating. A basket or bag is lighter, more flexible, and usually easier to relocate. Choose the chest when the piece must perform as furniture and the room has enough lid clearance. Choose a basket or bag when access, mobility, or a smaller visual footprint matters more. For long-term or damp-prone storage, weigh dust protection against ventilation and the extra steps required to open the container.

The best location is the one that matches the routine. Keep an everyday throw within reach of the sofa or bed, and place less-used blankets in a measured shelf, cabinet, or under-bed zone. A dedicated home works only if returning the blanket takes less effort than leaving it on the nearest surface.
