A tighter joint can also reduce conditioned-air loss, but it adds a small amount of compression force. If the strip is too thick or poorly positioned, the door may become difficult to close, the latch may fail to engage, or a window sash may stop locking. A strip can also rub, tear, lose adhesion, trap moisture, or leave gaps at corners.

Measure the actual gap at several points instead of choosing a product from nominal door width alone. Caulk placed where a door or sash must move can crack or impede movement. Air sealing is not the same as ventilation. Do not use weatherstripping to block a required vent or fresh-air path, and do not assume that sealing every leak is safe for every home.
