A 2D floor plan is a scaled, overhead drawing of one room or building level. It shows plan geometry and elements such as walls, openings, room uses, windows, fixtures, and sometimes furniture. In a small home, it turns furniture footprints, door swings, storage depth, and everyday routes into shapes you can compare before buying. It is not a 3D room planner. A furniture plan can help with the contents layer, but the 2D floor plan should keep that layer tied to the room shell and fixed systems. Trace the plan in use. Show a person standing at the counter, a chair pulled out, an appliance door open, or a bag carried through the entry when those conditions affect the route. Compare two arrangements on the same base. One may fit a larger sofa but leave a less direct path to the bathroom. Another may preserve movement but reduce storage. The plan makes that tradeoff visible.
Choose a scale for the purpose
A scale tells the reader how the drawing relates to the room.
