An egress path is a life-safety route to an exit. Everyday circulation is not automatically either.
The 2010 ADA Standards generally specify a 36-inch minimum clear width for an accessible route in covered contexts, with exceptions and conditions for reduced segments. In specified settings, the turning reference is a 60-inch circle or T-shaped space. A 180-degree turn around a narrow element can require more clear width. Access Board guidance relates accessible routes to entrances and accessible spaces connected by a circulation path. These are technical references, not universal requirements for every private residence. A route can meet a nominal width at one point and fail where a cabinet projects or a door opens.
Measure the finished route
Trace the route between the destinations people use every day. Measure the narrowest finished condition with doors open as used, drawers extended, furniture in its operating position, and thresholds present. Include the space needed to turn and approach objects. A chair, open drawer, appliance door, laundry basket, or sofa bed can temporarily narrow the route, so an empty-room measurement is not enough. In a studio, check both daytime and nighttime furniture configurations. For a compact layout, test the entry-to-bath route with the sofa bed open and pantry doors extended. That scenario exposes conflicts an empty plan hides.
Protect intersections and turning points. A shoe rack placed where someone must change direction can block the route even when the straight hallway is wide. Test peak conditions such as two people passing, a mobility aid, an open sofa bed, and an appliance door. If the route is intended to meet an accessibility rule, review its full continuity, surfaces, doors, turns, thresholds, and applicable jurisdiction. Width alone does not establish accessibility.
Route versus room area
Nominal floor area tells you less than the clear route during real use. A room can have adequate area on an empty plan and still become hard to use when a bed opens or a cabinet door extends. Wider routes can reduce furniture and storage capacity, but a route that is too narrow makes the rest of the room difficult to use. Do not count the same floor patch as both storage and circulation when a door or drawer must open there. Turning space is part of the room's usable area because it lets people reach and operate what is around it.
The shortest line through a room is not necessarily the route that works. Plan for the path between actual destinations, not just the gap between walls. If a route must pass around a corner, preserve the maneuvering space at that corner. If furniture changes position, measure each likely operating state.
Common mistakes
Measuring wall to wall ignores projections and open footprints. Measure clear finished width instead. Planning only the closed furniture state leaves a bed or appliance blocking the path when it is in use. Draw the open positions and check the narrowest point. Filling a corner because it looks unused can remove a turning point. Calling any 36-inch path accessible also skips the route elements and jurisdiction that control that conclusion. An egress route has a separate life-safety purpose and should not be treated as ordinary furniture space.
A workable circulation path preserves movement and nearby use at the same time. Test it furnished, including the objects and equipment that occupy the route during likely peak conditions. If the layout cannot preserve the path and the intended activity together, reduce the fixture, move it, or choose another arrangement. Recheck the route when the furniture configuration changes.
