How cornice lighting uses a small room

That indirect layer can make a low-contrast wall read as a broader luminous plane, which may help a small room feel less visually compressed. The effect is different from aiming a bare lamp at the ceiling or adding crown molding with no lighting. The source should remain concealed from normal seated and standing sightlines. A diffuser or channel can help hide an LED strip or lamp when the source would otherwise be visible, but the exact product and installation method determine what is suitable.
Do not borrow a universal cornice dimension, LED spacing, wattage, or brightness figure from another project. Installation depth, driver location, access opening, heat management, and spacing are project-specific or manufacturer-specific details. Plan a service route for the driver and a way to clean the ledge before closing the assembly. Follow the fixture instructions and preserve access for replacement or inspection. A neat finished surface is not a successful installation if its driver cannot be reached.
In a compact room, check the cornice against doors, tall furniture, vents, and ceiling fixtures. A small projection can be visually quiet along a wall but awkward above a narrow passage or near a cabinet door. Continuous geometry also matters: interruptions can make the light wash uneven and expose bright points. Review the loaded room, not just an empty plan, before choosing the run.
Cornice lighting versus cove lighting
Cove lighting is the nearest comparison. Both conceal a source and use reflected light, but cornice lighting is the more specific arrangement: the source is shielded by a panel parallel to the wall and attached to the ceiling. Cove is a broader architectural term that may describe light from a recess, ledge, or other formed cavity. A ceiling recess may produce a similar wash while not matching the cornice definition.
That boundary matters when space is tight. If you want a narrow, ceiling-edge wall wash, look for a cornice or concealed cornice system and verify how its panel, source, and access are arranged. If you only need indirect light and can form a deeper recess, another cove design may be more appropriate. If you need a reversible rental solution, a plug-in uplight or wall washer can imitate the visual layer without constructing a cornice, though it will not provide the same concealed architectural line.
Before choosing, measure the ceiling edge, identify the viewing angles, note the wall and ceiling finishes, and confirm where the driver can be serviced. Those checks reveal whether the visual gain is worth the installation depth and maintenance burden in your room.
