Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) describes how the conditions inside a home affect comfort and health, including particles, gases, ventilation, humidity, temperature, and pollutants released by cooking, cleaning, smoke, materials, and furnishings. In a compact home, a small air volume can let cooking emissions, moisture, pet dander, and cleaning products move quickly between the kitchen, sleeping area, and work zone. IAQ is the condition being managed, not a single air purifier, ventilation fan, or sensor reading. An air purifier addresses only the pollutants it is designed to capture, while IAQ also depends on source control, appropriate ventilation, and moisture management.

What IAQ includes in a small home

Start by identifying what is entering or accumulating in the air. Cooking can add particles and gases, bathroom use can add moisture, and cleaning products can add vapors. Smoke, furnishings, building materials, and pets can contribute other pollutants. In an open-plan studio, the same air circulation that saves floor area can spread those conditions through the entire living space instead of keeping them in one room.

A useful IAQ check looks at four connected questions: What is the source? Can it be removed or isolated? What is the ventilation path? Is moisture being controlled? Also inspect the condition of filters and exhaust equipment. A consumer monitor can provide a clue about a particular pollutant or trend, but one reading is not a universal pass or fail score for residential IAQ. The relevant pollutant, instrument, conditions, and guidance all matter.

For routine apartment use, control the source first. Use a range hood or window exhaust while cooking, and keep bathroom exhaust vented outdoors when the system is designed for that. Bring in outdoor air when it is clean and practical, while recognizing that an open window can also bring in outdoor pollution or humidity. IAQ versus air purification

IAQ is broader than air purification. Source control removes or reduces the cause. Ventilation exchanges indoor air with outdoor air when that outdoor air is suitable. Filtration captures selected pollutants that pass through the filter. These measures can complement one another, but a portable particle cleaner cannot remove every pollutant, correct inadequate exhaust, or solve the cause of a moisture or mold problem.

That boundary matters in a small space because a purifier can be easy to buy but easy to over-credit. If a cooking source remains, use exhaust at the source. If a leak is feeding mold growth, repair the moisture pathway and clean or remediate the affected material appropriately. Filtration may reduce some airborne particles as a supplement, but it does not make the underlying source disappear.

Choosing compact-home equipment

A portable air cleaner is generally intended for one room or area. For particle filtration, compare its Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR, with the room it must serve rather than choosing by cabinet size or a marketing area alone. A higher CADR means more particle-filtering capacity and generally a larger served area. In a studio, position and operating noise also affect whether the unit can run consistently, but those practical considerations do not replace the room-size comparison.

Treat the footprint as part of the IAQ decision. A cleaner or dehumidifier occupies floor or shelf space, while a window or exhaust fan may trade indoor control for outdoor humidity or pollution. Filters also need regular replacement. A dirty or overloaded filter will work less effectively, so include replacement access, cost, and storage in the layout. Standards and jurisdiction

ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2025 covers residential ventilation, local exhaust, source-control, and filtration requirements. It is a named consensus benchmark, not an automatic legal requirement in every dwelling. Local adopted building codes may use another edition, add requirements, or apply differently by building type and jurisdiction.
