Minimum passage width is the narrowest finished clear space a movement route retains between the faces of the obstructions that constrain it. In a small home, that is the width left after trim, handrails, furniture, handles, and open doors take their share. It is a planning measurement, not a universal residential number. It is also not the same as minimum corridor width, which may name a code or project requirement for a particular corridor, occupancy, or building condition.

Measure the route you will actually use

Start with the finished layout, not a floor plan's bare wall dimensions. Draw the route from entry to destination and mark every projection. Measure between the finished faces that constrain movement. Include baseboard and door trim, handrails, cabinet pulls, furniture arms, open doors, and drawer fronts when they reduce the gap. The narrowest clear segment controls the passage width.

Check the route in its worst operating condition. A chair pulled out, a person at a counter, an open refrigerator or oven door, a stroller, laundry in hand, or a mobility device can change the useful width. In a studio or narrow apartment, a sofa arm or cabinet handle can turn an adequate gap into a pinch point.

A 36-inch nominal gap beside a kitchen island may narrow once overhangs, stools, handles, and people using the work zone are included. Sketch those objects at operating positions. If someone must turn or pass, draw that movement separately instead of checking only the straight run.

Use code numbers with their labels attached

The 2010 US ADA Standards for Accessible Design, Section 403.5.1, specify 36 inches (915 mm) minimum clear width for walking surfaces in covered Title II and Title III settings. The same section permits a 32-inch (815 mm) clear segment only when it is no more than 24 inches (610 mm) long and the stated separation conditions are met. That conditional exception is not a universal private-home target.

The ADA accessible-route provisions also add space for movement events beyond a straight passage. Around some 180-degree turns at a narrow obstruction, that configuration uses 42 inches (1,065 mm) approaching and leaving the obstruction and 48 inches (1,220 mm) at the turn, unless a 60-inch (1,525 mm) turning width is provided. When an accessible route is less than 60 inches wide, the cited provisions call for 60-by-60-inch (1,525-by-1,525-mm) passing spaces at intervals of 200 feet (61 m). These figures belong to the 2010 ADA accessible-route context.

A jurisdiction-specific example shows why the label matters. The Florida Building Commission's official code-change analysis for the 5th Edition (2014) Florida Building Code, Building, identifies Chapter 10, Section 1018.2 and Table 1018.2 as the corridor-width provision. This cross-reference is not operative table text. It does not establish a width for any occupancy row or Florida-specific unobstructed-width wording. Treat it as a jurisdiction-and-edition reference, not a national residential rule or proof of the current requirement elsewhere.

Plan around the worst operating condition

Put the route on a scaled space plan before buying furniture. Use the smallest finished measurement as the controlling number, then recheck it after rugs, tables, storage pieces, doors, and hardware are installed. A route that works only when every chair is pushed in is not a reliable daily route.

In a compact kitchen, protect the passage while the work zone is occupied. A stool and a person's standing position still matter when you judge the route. In a living room, check beside a sofa with a person seated, a drawer open, or a door swung. For a rental, moving one cabinet or choosing a narrower handle may preserve more usable floor area.

Treat clearance as a relationship between the route and the thing beside it. If the route includes an exit, a required accessible route, or a regulated alteration, ask the building official or a qualified designer which adopted code and edition applies. A household measurement cannot establish legal accessibility, egress, or compliance.

Minimum passage width versus minimum corridor width

Minimum passage width describes the measured limiting clearance along a route. Minimum corridor width can name a rule or project requirement for a corridor, occupancy, building type, or access condition. They may overlap, but one asks what remains in the finished layout and the other what a governing requirement demands.

Before using a number, identify the route's purpose, users, pinch locations, turning needs, passing needs, and governing rule. Calling a household passage ADA compliant at 36 inches skips facility scope and route geometry. A corridor gap that matches a table can still lose width to furniture and doors.

Common mistakes to correct

  • Measuring between bare walls, then installing trim, a handrail, or deep furniture in the gap. Measure the finished clear width at every constriction.
  • Treating 36 inches as the minimum for every home. Label it as a 2010 ADA covered-setting reference and check the adopted residential rule for the project.
  • Checking only the straight segment. Draw any 180-degree turn and passing location separately when that movement is planned.
  • Using a code number from a different place or edition because it is convenient. Keep the jurisdiction, edition, scope, and exception attached to the number.

For a small-space layout, the answer is the narrowest clear route that still supports the intended activity. Measure it with the room in use, then verify any local or regulated requirement before construction, alteration, rental, or sale.
