Pocket Door

A pocket door is a door slab that runs on rollers along an overhead track and retracts into a pocket, or cavity, inside the wall. In a compact bathroom, closet, or studio, it removes the hinged door's swing arc from the floor and can free the approach to a fixture. A barn door slides across the wall face instead; it does not disappear inside the wall.

How a pocket door uses space

The visible opening understates the installation area. The assembly includes the slab, rollers, track, guides, pocket frame, jambs, stops, latch, and wall finish. The slab is not the entire opening requirement. The frame determines the exact wall space needed. When open, the slab needs a parking zone inside the wall, so the wall must be wide enough for the opening and pocket together. That recovered floor area requires a longer wall zone without ordinary plumbing, electrical wiring, or ductwork in the pocket.

The frame also changes what can occupy the wall face. Jamb depth, header, trim, and casing add construction dimensions beyond the slab, leaving less uninterrupted room for switches, art, or furniture than the opening width alone suggests. Map both door positions before choosing the system. With the door closed, check furniture, trim, switches, and the room approach. With it open, check latch reach, handle projection, ventilation, and nearby furniture. In a small bathroom, the gain is worthwhile only if the parked slab and hardware leave the route between the door, vanity, and fixtures workable.

Plan the opening and wall cavity

Do not order a pocket door from slab width alone. Use the selected frame system's rough-opening dimensions, pocket length, jamb depth, and header requirements. Field-measure the existing opening and wall rather than estimating from the visible casing. For interior-door measurements, Masonite recommends measuring rough-opening width and height three times and recording the smallest measurement to the nearest 1/16 inch. The frame manufacturer's instructions control because dimensions vary by product.

Record the slab, finished opening, rough opening, jamb depth, header, parking length, trim, casing, and floor level. Check each measurement against the frame data before ordering. Inspect the pocket zone before cutting or enclosing the wall. Locate pipes, wires, ducts, framing, and structural conditions that could conflict with the frame. A service in the pocket may require rerouting and coordination. Depending on the project and jurisdiction, the alteration may also involve permits, electrical or plumbing review, fire or accessibility review, or landlord or condominium permission. In existing construction, plan how to reach the concealed rollers and frame if maintenance is needed.

Pocket door versus barn door

A pocket door travels inside the wall cavity. A barn door travels on a surface-mounted track in front of the wall, so it needs clear wall face beyond the opening. The barn-door arrangement can avoid opening the wall, but its moving slab may cover art, switches, outlets, or furniture. The pocket arrangement keeps the wall face clear while the slab is parked in the wall, but it demands a service-free cavity and more involved installation. A double bypass door is different again. Its slabs slide past one another and stack in a closet or opening rather than retracting into a wall pocket.

Privacy is a separate decision. Do not assume a pocket door matches a hinged door for sound or light control. Gaps can pass light and sound, and the slab, frame, and seals affect performance. That makes a pocket door a poor automatic substitute for a hinged door where privacy matters. For a bedroom, bathroom, or other room where privacy is critical, evaluate the actual system and room use before selecting it. Also confirm how the concealed rollers and frame can be reached later, since service access is part of the choice. If the wall cannot provide the cavity, or if concealed hardware would be difficult to service, a surface-sliding or hinged option may be more practical.
