Why door swing matters in a small home

How to plan the operating arc

Include thresholds and any closer resistance that changes how someone approaches or operates the door. Test the route with nearby drawers, cabinets, and a second door open.

Measure the clear opening with the door open 90 degrees when a standard or code calls for clear width. A nominal 32-inch door is not automatically a 32-inch clear opening because stops, the frame, and hardware affect the result. Keep required maneuvering clearances unobstructed through the required height. A chair, hamper, shelf, or basket is not leftover space if it occupies the approach.

Mark the latch side and the place where a person stands to pull the door toward them. Mark the push side too. Trace the route from the entry, bed, bathroom fixture, or kitchen and note each pinch point created by the open leaf. If the route works only after furniture or storage moves, revise the plan or the door solution.

The 2010 ADA Standards set maneuvering clearances for accessible manual doors according to approach and pull or push side. For a front approach to the pull side, the cited table uses 60 inches perpendicular to the doorway and 18 inches beyond the latch side. A front push approach uses 48 inches perpendicular to the doorway. ADA doorway clear width is at least 32 inches with the door open 90 degrees in the accessible doorway context. Door swing versus a pocket door

A door swing is the operating arc of a hinged leaf. A pocket door slides into a wall cavity and removes that hinged floor arc, but it needs compatible wall-pocket length and clear track space. It can also raise questions about plumbing, electrical work, structure, acoustic performance, fire ratings, hardware, and emergency access. The floor-area gain may therefore become a wall or construction problem. Reversing a swing without checking the corridor, egress, accessibility, and local requirements can make the route worse.
