A portable induction cooktop is a movable, plug-in countertop appliance that heats compatible cookware with an electromagnetic field. In a small kitchen, it adds a cooking zone without a remodel and can leave the counter when you need a desk or prep surface. It is different from a portable radiant hot plate, which heats a coil or radiant element first, and from a built-in induction cooktop or induction range, which belongs to a fixed cooking installation.
Fit the appliance to the counter
The unit generally has one or more induction zones, electronic controls, a glass-ceramic surface, and a power cord. Model options vary, including wattage, timers, heat or temperature controls, child locks, automatic shutoff, and the pan sizes a zone can recognize. Plan for the full footprint, not just the glass top. You need a stable counter area, a suitable grounded outlet, room for the cord, and a dry, reachable storage location if the unit will move between cooking and storage.
One unit can supplement a small apartment kitchen, studio, or RV, or provide a temporary burner during a renovation. Its capacity is limited. One zone cannot handle two heating tasks at once, and a large pan may crowd the controls or extend beyond the intended heating area. Measure the available counter depth and the appliance's full dimensions. Also decide where the hot unit will cool before storage. Keep it away from unstable edges and splash zones.
Induction heats the pan directly and stops generating the induction field when compatible cookware is removed. That can reduce residual surface heating compared with a radiant element and make wipe-down easier, but the pan, handles, oil, and food can remain hot. Wait for the model's hot-surface indicator or cooling guidance before touching or storing it. Keep flammable items away while it is in use.
Check the pan before the wattage
The US Department of Energy explains that flat-bottom cookware that attracts a magnet will work with induction. Hold a magnet to the flat underside of the pan. Do not rely on a label or material name alone. Stainless steel, aluminum, and nonstick descriptions do not prove compatibility because the magnetic base construction is what matters. A pan that does not meet the model's requirements may leave the zone unenergized.
Compare the pan diameter with the exact cooktop's heating-zone range. One Hamilton Beach portable model specifies flat-bottom cookware from 5 to 10 inches and lists compatible materials such as cast iron, enameled steel, and some stainless steel. That is guidance for that model, not a universal induction standard. A 12-inch pan can be a poor match for a zone intended for 5 to 10 inches, even if the pan attracts a magnet. Oversized or unsupported cookware can heat unevenly or interfere with the unit's intended operating area.
Protect the glass-ceramic surface from rough pan bottoms, especially rough cast iron. Lift cookware when possible, follow the maker's cleaning instructions, and let the surface cool before wiping. Check the minimum and maximum pan diameter, usable zone location, ventilation clearance, control layout, and permitted storage orientation.
Induction versus a portable radiant hot plate
Choose induction when your existing pans pass the magnet test, you want direct pan heating, and the zone size fits your cookware. Choose a portable radiant or coil hot plate when accepting a wider range of pans matters more than induction's cookware requirement. A radiant unit heats its element first, transfers heat through the pan base, and may remain visibly or residually hot after the control is turned down.

Those figures help check a compact counter or cabinet, but they are not category-wide dimensions or a promise that every portable induction cooktop has the same output. At 120 volts, 1,800 watts is about 15 amps before appliance tolerances. Compare the exact model's rating with its outlet instructions and do not assume a power strip is suitable.
