Under-stair storage is any enclosed or open storage volume built into the triangular space beneath an interior stairway flight, from simple open cubbies to a full-height, door-finished closet with drawers or a pull-out unit. The void exists because the sloped underside of a stair cannot serve as habitable floor, yet it sits on the ground floor of many compact homes, near the entry, kitchen, or living area where everyday storage is scarcest. Filling it reclaims floor-equivalent volume without adding furniture footprint, which makes it some of the most useful dead space in a small home.

How stair geometry sets the usable wedge

The slope is fixed by the stair rules themselves. Under IRC-based residential provisions (IRC 2018 as adopted in California), risers are capped at 7 3/4 inches (196 mm) and treads must run at least 10 inches (254 mm), measured between the foremost projections of adjacent treads. Those caps set how fast the soffit drops above any storage built under the run. As an illustration only, a 10-tread flight with 10-inch runs creates a void roughly 100 inches deep, and clear height under the soffit falls by up to one riser height per tread, so a 36-inch-tall door can fit only under the lowest few treads. No typical-depth figure exists for the category because geometry varies run by run, so treat every number here as a reason to measure your own flight. Two more rules shape the fit. Nosings must project 3/4 to 1 1/4 inches beyond the riser face, which shaves depth off any flush-fitted drawer. And riser and tread dimensions within a flight may vary by no more than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm), which matters when a drawer front must follow an existing sloped face.

Under-stair storage vs the hall or stairwell closet

Readers most often confuse under-stair storage with a hall closet tucked beside the stairs. A hall closet is ordinary furniture-height cabinetry with a rectangular interior of constant depth; under-stair storage uses the sloped soffit, so usable height and depth shrink toward the top of the run. The confusion costs real volume. A standard modular closet kit assumes a constant-depth box, and inside the triangle the same kit loses capacity toward the top of the run while its doors can foul the nosings or the soffit, wasting the volume the upgrade was meant to capture. Match the enclosure to the wedge, not to a rectangle.

What the code allows before you build

US residential codes based on the IRC require stairway headroom of at least 6 feet 8 inches (2032 mm), measured vertically from the sloped line adjoining the tread nosing, and editions and section numbers vary by jurisdiction; California's 2025 edition renumbers the section. Storage faces or pull-outs that extend from the riser face must not reduce that measured headroom along the walking surface. Because residential stair provisions sit under the Means of Egress chapter, verify with your local building department that protruding drawers or doors do not reduce the required egress width, particularly if the stair is a required exit path. Retrofit situations add a second constraint. Under the California Residential Code's existing-buildings appendix, headroom on existing basement stairs being altered may not be reduced below the existing finished headroom, which rules out aggressive build-outs on older stairs. Handrail geometry matters too. Required handrail height is 34 to 38 inches measured from the sloped plane adjoining the tread nosing, so any storage face built along the stair must sit behind or below that plane. Readers in the UK work to a different number, because Approved Document K requires 2 m of clear stairway headroom (2013 edition).

Measure the wedge, then choose the mechanism

Measure clear height under the soffit at each tread position and confirm the nosing projection before ordering drawers; sizing a pull-out against the nominal rectangular footprint of the stair is the most common and most expensive mistake. Mechanisms include fixed doors on the riser face, drawer banks that pull out perpendicular to the stair run, tilt-out trays, pull-out pantry or shoe units, and open cubbies. In a one-bedroom apartment with a straight flight to the second floor, the entry zone next to the stairs can absorb a full bank of shoes, coats, and cleaning gear inside the sloped void, replacing a freestanding closet that would otherwise block circulation.
