A wall stud is a vertical framing member in a wood- or metal-framed wall or partition. It supports wall finishes and may carry roof, floor, ceiling, wind, or partition loads, depending on the wall design. In a small home, finding the stud can let a shelf, cabinet, rail, or anti-tip restraint use the wall instead of consuming scarce floor area. The nearest confusion is a wall anchor: a stud is part of the wall structure, while an anchor is hardware that creates an attachment interface in a hollow or solid substrate. A stud finder is the locating tool, not the framing member.

What a stud does in a compact home

A stud is one member of a wall assembly that also may include plates, headers, blocking, sheathing, and trim framing around openings. That matters when you plan vertical storage. A screw that enters a suitable stud can be more reliable than one held only by the face paper of drywall, but hitting a stud does not create a universal load rating. Fastener type and length, the member itself, load direction, edge distance, the back of the cabinet, and the projection from the wall all affect the connection. A shallow coat rail in a 24-inch-wide entry may need to shift off center to meet a stud, or use a backer board that spans several studs. That compromise may be worthwhile when a freestanding unit would narrow the passage.

Wood studs are commonly nominal 2 by 4 or 2 by 6 lumber. American Wood Council guidance describes 16 inches on center as normal exterior stud spacing, with 24-inch spacing acceptable in some one-story conditions when the sheathing and siding are adequate. On center means from the center of one stud to the center of the next, not the clear gap between their faces. DOE Building America guidance likewise describes traditional wood framing at 16 inches on center and advanced framing commonly using 24-inch-on-center 2 by 6 walls. Advanced framing is a construction strategy that can reduce unnecessary wood and leave more cavity space for insulation. It does not tell you how the wall already in front of you was framed.

Do not map a storage layout from a ruler alone. Corners, windows, doors, and wall intersections change the pattern. Openings can have king and jack studs or headers, so the next framing member may not follow the usual spacing from a corner or casing. Metal studs are another possibility. They are cold-formed framing members with different fastening behavior and may be harder to identify with a magnet. Heavy attachments may need manufacturer-appropriate screws or backing. Masonry and other wall assemblies have no wood-stud pattern at all.

How to locate one before mounting storage

Treat a stud finder as a clue, not proof. Its signal can be affected by lath, metal, wiring, moisture, or multiple wall layers. Confirm a likely location with measurements, nearby outlets or trim, construction drawings, or a small test hole where that is permitted. Before drilling, consider where plumbing, electrical wiring, and other services may run. A stud is useful for a connection, but it is not permission to drill anywhere along its length.

For a shelf or cabinet, start with the manufacturer's attachment instructions and identify the full load path. Check whether the mounting holes line up with one or more studs, whether a rail or backer can distribute the load, and whether the projected load will lever the fasteners away from the wall. A wall cleat can help spread an attachment across framing when its own design and fasteners support that use. If the desired position misses the framing, choose a suitable anchor, revise the layout, or add designed backing rather than treating a drywall screw as structural support.

Drilling, notching, and local rules

Limited fastening into a stud is different from cutting, drilling, or notching it. The 2024 International Residential Code has wall-specific provisions for stud dimensions and spacing, along with a dedicated drilling and notching section. Those provisions vary with the wall and the work being done. The 2024 IRC is a model code, not automatically the law in every US location. The adopted edition, state or city rules, building type, and wind or seismic conditions govern. Structural alterations, service conflicts, and work affecting fire protection deserve a qualified local review.

Before mounting, verify the actual framing, design the connection for the projected load, and preserve the member's role in the wall. The fastener, backing, wall type, and local requirements all belong in that decision.
